Master Hare and the Easter Egg

Many of the eggs in the collection of the Liechtenstein NationalMuseum show hares – they feature as Easter bunnies that paint and hide eggs, as humanized hares that wear tailcoats and walk upright, holding flower bouquets, as rabbits or brown hares and as motifs on chocolate egg molds. But what does «Master Hare» or «Meister Lampe» as he is called in German hunter's lingo or fairy tales, actually have to do with Easter and eggs? With around 40 differently designed eggs made of cardboard, metal and glass, as well as with eggs from chickens, ducks, geese and quails that have had decorations painted, glued or scratched on them, the presentation Master Hare and the Easter Egg goes on a historico-cultural search for clues, asking about the background of a phe-nomenon that is really not that old yet.
