Infant Jesus, wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger – Popular piety at Christmas

«And this will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger» (Luke 2, 12)

Drawing upon the Christmas narrative in the Gospel of Luke, the Christmas exhibition «Infant Jesus, wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger – Popular piety at Christmas» focuses on the Christ Child and His clothing. On display are around fifty waxworks and monastic works from the collection of the Liechtenstein NationalMuseum. Most were created by nuns in the 18th to early 20th centuries, using simple materials. They are beautiful examples of works of popular piety. A special feature is the so-called Fatschenkind, which shows the Infant Jesus tightly wrapped from head to toe using bandage-like ribbons.

Join us on our Live-Stream Vernissage on Saturday, 20th November 2021, at 2pm.
